Craig Finn and Some Guns at Off Broadway, 2.10.2012

The truth of the matter is simple: I’m not going to be able to sum up my feelings about the show as well as Roy over on RFT Music - I was at that seemingly legendary Hold Steady show in 2007; I was onstage with the band by the end of the show. To be perfectly honest, that particular show kicked my concert addiction into the stratosphere, where I’ve remained in the five years since.

But, I digress. Roy’s write-up is spot on, so I’ll just add this: Finn was a mere white collar away from looking like a preacher. Finn’s Hold Steady role is that of the observer, the man in the thick of the party that somehow seems omniscient. On his solo record (Clear Heart, Full Eyes), his attention is squarely on the aftermath - the unredeemed, the darkness, and the occasional glimmer of hope.

That collar would been appropriate.

Finn is always a captivating subject, and even with a “subdued” acoustic delivery, he’s still finger-pointing, arm waving charmer. The house lights, while dim, were more than enough to capture the action on stage. Granted, we’re talking about prime lenses and ISO 3200 or higher, but still. Shoot RAW, kids.

Unfortunately, a packed house and packed stage made getting even coverage of the entire band somewhat difficult. I’m not currently packing an ultrawide prime (or zoom), but it would have come in handy.
